Book tickets and tours →The cloister is open from 9:30 to 17:30, with the last entry at 17:00. The kiosk in front of the monument stops selling at 16:30. The regulation says the monument cannot close before 17:30 except for reasons of force majeure.
Tickets are for a day and a time slot: 9:30-10:30, 10:30-11:30, 11:30-12:30, 12:30-13:30, 13:30-14:30, 14:30-15:30 and 15:30-17:00. They are checked with a QR code or barcode reader. In the 9:30-10:30 slot the monument keeps a channel for groups with a guide. We could not read how much tolerance there is on the slot, or whether a ticket bought at the kiosk also has a slot.
The church of Santa Maria de Belém is open for worship and is free. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00, and on Sunday and religious holidays from 14:00 to 17:00. The regulation says the management may limit entries when crowds are exceptional, and the times of services are not stated.
The monument is tied to the State protocol and can close for special events, or when the weather puts visitors at risk. In June 2025 it closed from 11 to 13 June for official ceremonies and the Lisbon municipal festival, and reopened on Saturday 14, according to a notice of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal. We found no announced closure for the coming months.
For 24 and 31 December and Good Friday the monument has published nothing, so check before you plan those days. Special after-hours visits to the cloister, with a professional guide, can be requested 15 days ahead for Tuesday to Friday between 19:00 and 23:00, on the terms set by the monument.
The official pages list no free Sundays. Residents in Portugal enter free on 52 days a year of their choice (Acesso 52), with ID, not every day. The regulation also lists 18 April, 18 May and the European Heritage Days in September as free for everyone, following the instructions of the supervising body. We could not confirm them for 2027. In 2026 the Heritage Days were on 19 and 20 September, with free guided visits on registration.
