By tram 15E

Tram 15E runs from Praça da Figueira to Algés, with a stop called Mosteiro Jerónimos, according to Carris. The Carris timetable gives 43 minutes from Praça da Figueira to the Belém (Museu Coches) stop, and Mosteiro Jerónimos is the next one; we estimate 45 to 50 minutes from Praça da Figueira and 27 to 33 from Cais do Sodré. On weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00 trams leave Praça da Figueira every 10 minutes; we did not confirm the frequency on other days.

Fares are on the Carris website.

By bus

Carris lines 714, 727, 728, 729 and 751 have a stop called Mosteiro Jerónimos. The 714 runs from Cais do Sodré, the 727 from Estação Roma-Areeiro, and the 729 from Padre Cruz, via the Ajuda National Palace. We did not read the frequencies, so check the Carris timetables.

By train

The CP suburban line from Cais do Sodré to Cascais stops at Belém station, about 8 minutes after Cais do Sodré according to the CP timetable. Trains run about every 20 minutes through most of the day and about every 15 minutes in the weekday peaks. The first train from Cais do Sodré leaves at 5:30. We did not read the fare.

From Belém station the monastery is about 940 m on foot, roughly 12 to 13 minutes (our estimate from OpenStreetMap routing).

By metro, from the airport and from the centre

No metro station is in Belém. Baixa-Chiado and Cais do Sodré, on the green line, are the two points in the centre from which Belém can be reached: Cais do Sodré is the terminus of the green line and has the tram 15E, buses 714 and 728 and the CP train.

From the airport, the metro red line runs to Alameda, where you change to the green line towards Cais do Sodré, and then you take the tram, a bus or the train. We have not confirmed the journey times.

On foot, around the monastery

Walking distances are our estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, measured from the middle of the monastery, so allow for about 60 m of error. The Pastéis de Belém bakery is about 255 m away (3 to 4 minutes), the Maritime Museum about 315 m (4 minutes), the Centro Cultural de Belém about 475 m (6 minutes), the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) about 630 m (8 minutes) and the National Coach Museum about 770 m (10 minutes). Belém Tower is about 1.3 km away, roughly 17 minutes.

By taxi and by car

We found no official information on taxi ranks or parking at the monument, so we give none.
